Abstract: Performance requirements of complex applications such as medical diagnostic ultrasounds necessitate the use of a multi- or many-core platform. Thus far, most of the research into multi- and many-core computation has traditionally focussed on improving the average performance of an application. However, applications such as medical ultrasound, not only require high throughput computations, but also require predictable performance characteristics, and are consequently implemented on platforms explicitly designed for real-time computing. In this paper we show that using careful design and implementation decisions, it is possible to compute predictable performance metrics such as communication latencies, computation times and reaction times for high performance multiprocessing applications on the Intel SCC. Experimen tal results are validate our claim that many-core processors can indeed provide a predictable runtime environment.
