Abstract: Abstract: The NFS performance over Classical IP over ATM is investigated. ATM technology deployed in LANs delivers desktop speeds of 155 Mbps and more to modern computer systems. However, legacy applications such as NFS, created in the early 1980 were implemented over typical LAN speeds of less than 20 Mbps. In contrast to NFS version 2 which is implemented using UDP as the default transport protocol, and which adapts very well on ATM networks, NFS version 3 using TCP as the default transport protocol does not to perform as expected. There is a significant loss in its performance throughput which is also lower than the 10 Mbps throughput of Ethernet. Therefore, NFS version 3 with TCP as the transport protocol is analyzed for its performance in the utilization of the underlying high network bandwidth. The results presented here are based on extensive measurements conducted over NFS in an ATM environment comprising of Fore ATM switches and SUN workstations. The network file system NFS is equipped with the option to choose either of the two transport protocols UDP or TCP. Trade-offs are discussed, particularly between the choice of using UDP and using a best suited TCP send/receive buffer size for a high NFS throughput in a productive LAN.
