The overarching goal of DEVISE is to improve participants. theoretical and practical understanding of emergent D&E methods for interactive software and media, as well as techniques and tools being employed in different IT-enhanced sectors, through exploring differences and commonalities. Reviews of case studies and hands-on exercises will be employed as instruments to realize this goal. Of particular significance is to enlighten young SE and HCI researchers and practitioners through in-depth discussions with their experienced counterparts, enabling them to develop a holistic view of the overlapping fields of SE and HCI. Participants are expected to:
  • become familiar with application domains and some specialised D&E methodologies, and to be able to consider their generalisation and specialisation across domains and sectors;
  • gain knowledge and practical experience in designing and evaluating a range of innovative interactive systems with multiple methods and from multiple disciplinary perspectives;
  • learn how evaluation studies are devised and executed with respect to domain-specific as well as other contextual resources and constraints;
  • learn how different D&E methods address and trade off quality attributes deemed significant for innovative interactive systems and development processes, with special emphasis on creativity, automaticity, safety, security, usability, reliability and evolvability;
  • be inspired by how transdisciplinary approaches derived from biological or social sciences, or from the Arts or Humanities, can be adapted for designing and evaluating innovative interactive systems.
