Today, practically every research group and every larger sensor network project is using a platform for implementation work spanning a great variety of approaches and hardware architectures.
This is primarily due to the large application space with differing requirements on resources and architectures each on the one hand and the goal to minimize the overhead on the other hand. With
this large application domain for sensor networks, it is unclear how to match differing application requirements and platform characteristics to achieve optimal resource usage. This work
establishes a methodology for the classification and interpretation of sensor network platforms and develops a set of metrics that can be used to compare and analyse the characteristics of
different platforms. This is applied in a case study analyzing some state of the art sensor network platforms of the recent years. With this set of metrics and methodology we provide an intuitive
and easy to use visual tool for sensor network system designers. |
